Even things as simple as helping set the table (How many plates? How many knives?) can count as kindergarten math. Consider having your child help cook to learn fractions, and counting the bottles of tomato sauce on a grocery run. Since garage sales deal with small amounts of money (and we can usually find something for a quarter), this is great practical experience.

She also loves getting money and shopping at a garage sale with me. It helps that it is Minnie Mouse that shows her the time! As we make a schedule and set timers, she learns about passing time, time in general, and reading the time (very generally, at least, in terms of hours). You could even make up your own stories as you go about your days. Much of the time, a great picture book can introduce a mathematical concept to a kindergarten-age child in a way that is more memorable than any worksheet-based curriculum could do so. Our current favorite game to play during math time is Skip-Bo, which builds on number sense in great ways! Playing card games and board games helps my daughter gain basic number recognition as we count around a board, recognize doubles, and recognize common number pairs. I needed a new solution. To my surprise, our best result has been to completely drop the kindergarten math curriculum. Here are some tips to make sure your kindergarten math time nurtures your five- or six-year-old child’s natural love for learning. I knew that if I forced a the same methods and curricula on second child, it would only cause her to hate school time. He loved learning (especially math), so he survived the year of double math (among other things).īut each child is different.
KINDERGARTEN HOMESCHOOL WORKSHEETS MANUALS
I had more teacher’s manuals than I could count on one hand. When my oldest was beginning kindergarten, I excitedly bought a variety of curriculum for him so I could find the best. Kindergarten is the perfect time to “play” school, and kindergarten mathematics is the best place to start with making learning fun.
KINDERGARTEN HOMESCHOOL WORKSHEETS FREE
Since I’m not artistic (at all!) these free resources helped make our lapbooks and reinforced many of our unit studies.įeel free to use these Free Homeschool Printables to supplement any curriculum or unit study you are studying! Some of the free worksheets below also have additional activities and crafts as well. This year, I’m teaching my daughter kindergarten math without curriculum. We also used many free printable worksheets for our lapbooks. Much of what was in that independent learning folder was free printable worksheets I found by searching the internet. Often I had a child or two who would wake up and want to start school before the rest of us, so they could work on their independent work while the rest of us settled into the day. Grab some cheap two pocket folders at Target, Walmart or the Dollar Tree to use this method. On one side of the folder was their “to do” work and when they completed the page they moved it to the “finished” pocket.

Every night (or at the end of the school day) I would fill it with a few worksheets and fun activities they could do in the morning. When my children were young each child would have a small independent work folder. They are also great to keep kids busy on road trips or when you need a few extra minutes to get something done. I know many homeschoolers despise worksheets, but several of my kids LOVED them. However, as long as you aren’t throwing pages at your children all day long I think they are a great way to supplement your child’s learning at home.ĭon’t hesitate to get creative with worksheets. I’ve said many times that I am not a huge fan of homeschool worksheets.
